about

When one romance ends, the potential for another is born, and while there is comfort in the idea that love is somewhere out there for you, it’s not always easy to know when you’re truly ready for it. “Lilacs” exists in this space. It’s essentially a letter from a future lover to a newly-broken heart, and it gently reminds us not to rush from one love to the next. The song was a direct response to a relationship that ended amicably—in its wake, we each knew that the other deserved and would find love again. We didn’t know when it would happen or what it would look like, but you never can predict these things. The pivotal metaphor in this tune is the aroma of lilacs from somewhere unseen; whether you want to go after it or wait it out, new love will always be on the horizon.

lyrics

Fragrant sting of signaled spring
A tune you lost but loved to sing
When now was then
And if you see that song in me
Let silence hold your elegy
Until it’s time to love again
And i’ll meet you where the lilacs bloom

Lay down your lilies
Once your eyes have dried
A new bouquet’s round the corner
In the meantime

Aromas scheme to fill the stream
For glassy eyes too bruised to dream
For dreaming hurts
When every scent means hours spent
Wondering where the feelings went
And what they meant, and who was first
And what if you saw a lilac bloom?

Lay down your lilies
Once your eyes have dried
A new bouquet’s round the corner
In the meantime
I’ll be patient, don’t you worry
Worst thing you could do
Is hurry into loving someone new

Oh, the seasons change and so will you
And maybe soon, you’ll let a lilac bloom
